Almost every home in America has a living room. The living room is a room where the family gathers, where guests are invited, and where you relax on the couch when you are alone at home. But how big is the average living room?

Living Room Vs. Family room

Despite popular belief, a living room and a family room are not always the same. There are differences between a living room and a family room. Some homes have both, while others exchange the term.

Living rooms are older than family rooms, while family rooms have not been used for more than a century. It all started when families decided to invite children into the living room and let it be their space as well.

When this happened, new rooms were designed to accommodate both children and adults. Games were added, extra televisions and furniture made for comfort. While living rooms are primarily for guests and made to prioritize looks beyond ease of use.

Average residence size in the United States

In 2018, Paul says Schema from Roth Design Build Inc. NYC that there is a large selection for living rooms. The minimum stay size is about a 7 × 10 room. But of course this is not the average, it is simply the smallest acceptable living room.

Small living room

Paul said, “this would be a small room and would only really allow a small 2-person sofa on one side of the room in the layout. But if there are only two or three of you, this can work well in a small space. ”

Small living room

According to Mr. Form is a 10 x 13ft the next size. “This arrangement will allow 2 or 3 people to watch TV comfortably if it was mounted on the wall behind the sofa.” However, this is still a small living room.

Medium living room

This is when we start to get into a normal stay size. A living room of 12 x 18 ft is a living room of fairly average size. Paul says this living room “fits between 6 and 10 people in a conversation area with about 5 of the seats facing the TV.”

Of course, this is a 1500 square foot home. A larger home needs a larger living room. Homes over 2,000 square feet would consider a 12 x 18 foot living room smaller, while those under 1,000 square feet would find it extravagant.

Large living room

Any bigger than 300sqft and you’re lucky. Most large living rooms are about 300 sqm. Even most celebrity rooms are not much bigger than this. If you have space, it’s great, but it’s not really necessary.

“If you are lucky enough to have a living room with dimensions larger than 15 x 20 feet,” says Paul. “Then there is the opportunity to bring the sofas away from the walls, have deeper, more luxurious sofas and create secondary furniture groups.”

Living rooms in other countries

Each country has its own average and its own set of guidelines. Size of the living room is no exception. Each country has a unique average residence size, some of which are very different from the United States. Here are some of these numbers.

The United Kingdom

While the living room in the United States grows or remains the same, the average size of a living room in the United Kingdom is shrinking. In the 1970s, the average residence size was approx. 250sqft. The average residence size in the UK has now dropped to below 200 square meters.

Australia

Unlike the UK, living rooms in Australia are growing, as are house sizes in general. The average residence size in Australia is around 270 square meters and is growing. Australia has the largest house size in the world, so it’s really not surprising.

India

Due to the large differences in classes in India, it is difficult to trust an average. But the range is generally between 200sqft and 400sqft. Living conditions compared to the rest of the house are greater in India than in other countries.

Spain

In Spain, they have house size laws. In order for a building to be considered a house, the living room must be at least 9 sqm or just under 100sqft. If the living room, kitchen and dining room are combined, this number is doubled.

Hong Kong

There are a large number of living rooms in Hong Kong, but in general they have one of the smallest house sizes in the developed world. Hong Kong has an average living size of about 160 square meters.

It gets worse in certain areas where the living room is on average less than 50 square meters. Most Americans and Australians may not even understand such a small living room, but it is normal in Hong Kong.

Make everything smaller

It sounds weird, but by cutting down on all your furniture, your room may look smaller. If the furniture takes up a lot of space, the space will look small. Avoid this by getting smaller sofas, smaller rugs and smaller tables.

Keep it low

When the furniture is low to the ground, the room looks more open. As we discussed before, an open space always looks bigger. That is why we keep the furniture small. Open space is space that you would normally ignore.

Open bottoms

Yes. Exposing the legs of the furniture can make a living room look bigger. Sofa skirts can bring a room in and make a living room look small and enclosed. When you keep the entire floor exposed, you make sure to get the most out of your room.

Mirrors everywhere

Mirrors reflect light. They can easily make a room look bigger. Adding one or two to your living room or dining room in an open concept home can make your living room look much larger. Use large mirrors for a greater effect.

Keep it clean and slim

Try not to add too many busy details. Busy patterns can make a living room look cramped. Choose simple patterns or solid colors. This can really open up a space, especially when the patterns are on large pieces like sofas, rugs and curtains.

Bright colors

Light colors make a room look bigger than dark colors. This does not mean that you can not use dark colors, but if you want your living room to look bigger, focus on light colors. This is most important on floors and walls.

Lightweight furniture

Bright colors are important, as are light furniture. Large furniture weighs a room down, to no surprise. So try to get clean curtains, light sofas and whimsical accent chairs for a larger space.

Vertically all the way

Vertical lines bring the eyes toward the ceiling. It is an illusion that can make ceilings look high and rooms look bigger. Too many horizontal lines can have the opposite effect, making the room look compressed.

Create flow

The most important thing is to create a good flow. Flow is about movement and direction. It’s about controlling toe focus and making a room feel natural and relaxed. It is the most important part of opening space in a living room.
