Breville first introduced the Barista Express over a decade ago, serving delicious espressos to modern homes around the world. Several years later, the Australian brand decided to raise the bar by offering coffee lovers the Breville Barista Pro.

People who are not familiar with the two models may assume that they are the same except for a few aesthetic design differences. However, is that enough to justify abandoning the Breville Barista Express for its new cousin in the Barista series? Find out here.

Review: Breville Barista Pro

Design and user interface

It is easy to differentiate the Pro from the Express based on appearances alone. The Breville Barista Pro has a small rectangular digital display that presents valuable information to anyone who uses the espresso machine.

You can easily adjust the machine parameters without wondering whether the entered value is correct or not. Everything is displayed on the bright display, including the cleaning cycle, when to take espresso and the temperature of the brew.

The Barista Express does not have any digital display function, which consists mainly of buttons and dials that users have to manipulate one by one. The manual must be memorized to determine the correct buttons to press and the various actions required to perform or modify the parameters.

The digital display alone already makes the Barista Pro a clear winner among people who demand perfection in their brewing adventures without sacrificing convenience.

The Barista Pro and the Express have almost the same physical dimensions. The Barista Express measures 12.5 x 12.6 x 13.1 inches, while the Barista Pro comes with a measurement of 13 x 12 x 13 inches. Both espresso machines should sit nicely on a kitchen counter.

Steam cooking performance

The Pro and Express heat water quickly, delivering barista-quality espressos in a flash. However, they use different water heating technologies which give the Breville Barista Pro a clear advantage over the Express.

the Breville Barista express features Thermocoil technology, similar to conventional heat exchangers in traditional water heaters. Cold water passes through the coil, raising its temperature to an ideal 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

While the technology is efficient, it still takes about a minute or two to heat up its element before you can begin the coffee extraction process.

On the other hand, the Breville Barista Pro already comes with the more advanced Thermojet system. The machine only needs about 20 seconds to heat up right after starting before it can start delivering hot water to the coffee grounds.

In general, the Barista Express is perfect for people who only need to brew a glass or two of espresso. If multiple shots are to be served to different guests without significant downtime, the Breville Barista Pro worth getting.

The Pro’s advantage also extends to its milk steaming capabilities. The Express can steam a cup of whole milk in a minute, while the Pro can steam 15 seconds faster. It makes perfect sense to get the Breville Barista Pro if you’re serving lattes and cappuccinos to a group of people.

Adjusting the coffee grinder

Breville designed their Barista Express and Pro with an integrated coffee grinder. However, this is another area where the Pro has a clear advantage over its older cousin.

The Barista Express’s 18 grind stops are a bit large, making fine adjustments difficult, if not difficult. The Barista Pro offers 30 grind settings, giving seasoned coffee drinkers more control over the consistency of their coffee grounds.
