What is a wash mat?
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of taking care of a wash mat, let’s look at what they are. ONE washing mat sits at the bottom of your sink to provide a safer place where plates can rest when you hand wash them. It also helps catch food pieces so they don’t go down the drain. A wash mat can protect the sink from heavier dishes that move around and potentially crack porcelain or paint.
That is it. They are very simple tools for your kitchen, but they serve a unique and important purpose.
Washing mat types
With the growing popularity of washing mats, there are plenty of new options. Most washing mats on the market consist of a variety of materials, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. These are a few of the types available. Continue reading after this section to see which of these washing mats are best for washing in the dishwasher!
Rubber washing mats
Tough and able to withstand high temperatures on average, mats for rubber washing has been around for a long time. They have the disadvantage of leaching chemicals into your dishes or your food. They can eventually become quite uneven and start leaving small bits of rubber behind, which means you may need to replace your rubber zinc mat in a few years. However, they tend to be quite cheap and easy to find.
Silicone washing mats
Silicone washing mats (see Amazon) lasts the longest and withstands very high heat and lots of use. Unfortunately, not many people make silicone wash mats yet. But with a little searching, you may be able to find some really cute designs. Unlike rubber, silicone is much better for the environment and does not leach out chemicals in your food or plates, it will typically also last a little longer and not leave pieces.
Plastic washing mats
Although not as common or popular these days, plastic mats (see Amazon) is still around. A plastic mat needs to be replaced much faster than the other types and have the chance to crack if too much emphasis is placed on them. These are very cheap alternatives to the other types of wash mats.
Wood washing mats
You can find some wash mats that are made of wood. However, we recommend that you stay away from these, as wooden items for your kitchen can usually contain bacteria and rot fairly quickly.
Do I have to wash my washing machine in the dishwasher?
When it’s time to wash your washing mat, your methods need to change depending on the type of mat. For most washing mats, it is recommended to wash them in the dishwasher, but always check first.
On most dishwashers, the top rack does not get as hot as the bottom, so you may want to have more delicate washing mats on the sides of the top rack. Hot water typically comes from the bottom of modern dishwashers, however you should always check your dishwasher model to be sure.
If you have one solid plastic washing mat, rinse off the remaining food pieces and place the mat in the top rack. If your plastic mat is particularly thin, it may be best to just sink it otherwise washing mat may melt or twist in the dishwasher, even if you place it on the top stand.
A rubber washing mat looks like a silicone mat, but they can get stained and dirty a little faster. They also respond poorly to extreme heat or cold. Another problem with a rubber wash mat is that some people have mentioned that they retain certain stains from foods that are very acidic, such as tomatoes. They can be washed in the dishwasher, but be very careful Avoid the hottest part of your dishwasher, and do not send a rubber mat through the ultra-hot drying cycle.
Silicone washing mats can actually withstand higher temperatures than most other mats. Depending on their thickness, they can even be placed in the bottom rack of a dishwasher. Silicone wash mats are not as popular at the moment, but they are slowly arriving there thanks to the durable and more environmentally friendly nature of silicone.
Take good care of yourself!
Just Check the maximum heat of the dishwasher before putting plastic or rubber mats inside. It really is that easy to avoid a catastrophic carpet melting. A silicone washing mat should be fine in most dishwashers with high heat, but be sure to first check that the washing mat’s special washing instructions or heat tolerance are.
A wash mat is always a great addition to any home, especially if you want to extend the life of your smart dish and sink. The style and material of the washing mat will determine if it is dishwasher safe. Silicone and rubber mats are the safest if placed in the dishwasher, although your thicker drywall mat may be okay on the top rack.
How do you clean washing mats?
Depending on your mat, you can fill the sink with a warm water and bleach solution to clean and remove any stains and then rinse and scrub with soapy water. You can also run it through the dishwasher. Make sure your washing mat no longer smells of bleach when it’s time to start washing up again.
How to clean stains from plastic mats?
You need to make a paste using three parts baking powder to one part water. Carefully scrape this into the plastic, then rinse off. If the stain persists, soak for five to ten minutes in a half and half diluted bleach solution and then scrub again with the baking soda paste. Be sure to rinse thoroughly.
To keep your wash mat smelling and looking great, wash it once or twice a week. This ensures that no bacteria or mildew can grow on it and make you sick.
