Coffee Gear Gift Ideas for the Holiday Season

Christmas gifts for coffee lovers

Each year, I make a list of the gifts I would give a coffee-loving friend.

This is my list for 2021!

I try to cover all the bottoms – from one that wants an easy way to make coffee, to the one that is more for hands-on brewing.

Plus, for someone who already has the brewing and painting systems they want, I’ve also come up with a few ideas for accessories.

Just to be clear, this is all equipment we ourselves have tried and tested and reviewed on this site.

Let’s get started…

I would give the drip brewer to a friend.

This is the drip brewer we use every day at home. It is one of the few drip brewers approved by the Specialty Coffee Association of America and used by a number of top industry experts in their homes. It’s not even very expensive.

The semi-automatic espresso machine I would give to a friend.

To be fair, there are plenty of semi-automatic espresso machines I have not tried. But of the four or five I have, I like this one. It is solid and reliable. Its key feature is that, unlike many other machines in its price range, it has a double boiler that heats water at different temperatures to make the espresso shot and steam the water.

The pod-based espresso machine I would give to a friend.

This machine only makes espresso and lungos, which are longer espresso shots. It uses disposable capsules, like K-Cups for espresso. I like it because the machine is super slim and fits easily on any counter and it gives a very good shot of espresso.

And of course, it’s much easier and faster than using a semi-automatic machine. It’s the best price of the Nespresso machines, but does not come with its own milk frother. (See below for our favorite milk frother.)

I would give the coffee grinder to a friend.

In fact, I have two favorite coffee grinders, both of which are conical burr grinders – the best kind. For years I used the Capresso Infinity grinder and it is still running. But recently I switched to the Breville grinder.

Why? Because Dose-Control Pro has a dial that allows me to grind the exact amount of coffee I need for my drip brewer every morning. I just press a button and I’m done.

The pour-over-brewer I would give to a friend.

There are a number of products out there that will do the job if you want to make coffee manually using the pour-over method.

I vote for Chemex for aesthetic reasons. I love the look of it and the fact that it is made of glass, wood and leather. No plastic in sight!

To me, there is something very appealing about a tool that requires manual skill, lots of practice … and is made from non-synthetic materials.

The coffee scale I would give to a friend.

Truth be told, I have only tried one set of coffee scales, Escali Arti. I dare say that there are others who are just as good.

As a gift idea, weights are perfect for the person who gets more serious about making good coffee, but who still uses a scoop to measure the ground coffee.

With a set of weights like these, you can measure to the nearest gram and really get started refining your brew.

If you know someone who moves up the ladder for coffee appreciation, they will love you for giving them some digital weights.

You can read more about why and when I use these weights here.

I would give the coffee machine to a friend who travels a lot.

I have a couple of brewing systems that would work fine when I travel. But I especially like Impress for a few reasons.

First, it is both a French press and a travel mug, rolled into one. I make my coffee in the Impress, and then I carry it with me and drink from it. Super simple.

Second, it is made of stainless steel and silicone. That means I never have to worry about breaking it. Even if it’s hard at the airport or if I drop it on the floor.

It also provides a good cup of coffee.
