For pet owners, there is just no way to avoid dirty floors. From peeing on carpets to pulling soil from the outside, your furry friends will always find something too cluttered in your home.
And if you have carpet, pet clutter is even worse.
Carpets are some of the most challenging surfaces to clean. Carpet fibers trap allergens such as animal hair, pollen, dust and dandruff.
A simple vacuuming will not suffice, especially when we are dealing with the mess of our furry friends. Even if you get out of animal hair, stains from urine, feces and vomit are not easy to remove.
That’s why it’s smart to invest in carpet cleaners like Hoover’s PowerDash Pet Compact Carpet Cleaner.
You need something powerful, yet gentle enough for everyday use, and as you will find in this review, Hoover meets this requirement.
In the following sections I will tell you:
- What features Hoover PowerDash has
- How well does Hoover PowerDash do its job compared to the competition
- About the Hoover PowerDash, it’s worth it for dog and cat owners
So let’s get to that.
Founded in 1907, Hoover is a household icon and a world leader in home cleaning and commercial quality appliances. The company is currently based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and manufactures high-tech vacuum cleaners and carpet cleaners for customers across the United States.
Hoover’s PowerDash Carpet Cleaner is a light and compact device, perfect for cleaning areas with both low and heavy traffic.
Here is the breakdown of Hoover PowerDash, feature by feature:
Unpacking and setup – “Simple and direct”
Okay, what’s in the box? Of course you get the Hoover PowerDash (in separate parts), and the user manual and warranty. You also get a free 64 oz bottle of cleaning solution.
This is a plus because 64 oz is not a small sample. You therefore do not need to buy the carpet shampoo separately.
But – what about the assembly process? The user manual has detailed instructions, from safety tips (to reduce the risk of electric shock and damage) to a comprehensive product guide that labels each part.
Overall, the process is relatively easy and fast as there are only four steps. When you open the box, you will find the carpet cleaner in different parts.
They are a 20 foot cord, 0.5 gallon double water tank, removable nozzle and a PowerSpin Pet Brush Roll.
The water tank, nozzle and brush roller simply need to be clicked into place. As for the cord, simply connect it to all the cord hooks.
In addition, the manual also provides useful tips on using the carpet cleaner, and warns you to ‘prepare’ the room before cleaning.
For example, the manual tells you to cover furniture legs with plastic to prevent wood flooring from staining the carpet. Similarly, it also warns you to tie long curtains or drapes up to protect them.
These tips are definitely useful for first-time users.
Design and maneuverability – “Easy and simple to move”
To be able to remove dirt in a carpet cleaning job, you need to perform several rounds. If the carpet cleaner is bulky and difficult to move, your shoulders will no doubt hurt.
Weighing in at 12.5 pounds, the Hoover PowerDash Pet is a more compact and lightweight carpet cleaner than most others. When the water tank is full, the vacuum weighs no more than 13 pounds.
This way, Hoover is much better for your back. In a 2012 study, it was even recommended as an appropriate cleanser for those with arthroscopic problems.
It is also easy to use because everything is controlled via a switch.
What, though, is the catch?
Well, the water tank is relatively small. You will need to refill the dirty water tank three to four times when cleaning a medium-sized rug. For smaller rugs, such as five times five, fill the tank up twice.
Therefore, it is better suited for those who want to clean small clutter. If you want to clean larger areas, you need a larger and more powerful carpet cleaner. Hoover PowerDash is more of a spot cleaner.
Purpose and results – “Do the job well”
As the name suggests, Hoover PowerDash is Pet Carpet Cleaner for cleaning pet mess. Therefore, its primary purpose is to get rid of animal hair, stains and odors.
How well does it do the job?
The answer: very good.
In general, PowerDash is a very basic carpet cleaner. But thanks to its PowerSpin brush roller and powerful suction, it is a practical device.
Through the control switch you can steadily increase the suction. This feature is convenient because it allows you to increase suction in some places without risking harm to others.
The box claims to give you ‘2X more cleaning power’ than the competition. While this is not the case with vacuum cleaners like the Bissell PowerForce PowerBrush, it is without a doubt above average.
It sucks up a significant amount of animal hair and dirt. The suction subsides when the dirty water tank is almost full, but this is a quick fix.
Combined with the PowerSpin brush, the suction removes discoloration from carpets. The PowerSpin brush gives you antimicrobial protection and removes the coarse mold and bacteria that come with stains from pets.
But – be aware; the bristles are a bit stiff and can stain older carpets.
If you are trying to remove odors, be sure to go over the carpet at least three to four times with an oxy carpet shampoo. This is because odors are more challenging to clean.
However, heed this warning: do not wait too long to clean the root. Hoover PowerDash is not as effective on older spots.
Stain Removal – “Decent Stain Removal”
Now let’s talk about stains. As I mentioned above, the PowerSpin brush helps to loosen and remove discoloration from your carpets.
But what type of stains and discolorations can Hoover PowerDash remove? Although it is specifically for pet stains, it can tackle most types of stain damage.
Basically, it can clean everything from grease stains to clay and ink stains. If you have children running around, it is a smart idea to keep this carpet cleaner on hand.
PowerDash comes with Hoover’s signature Paws & Claws Spot Remover, which is incredibly potent. It can reduce stains more than a year old.
However, with very old stains, do not expect complete removal, especially if they were caused by harsh substances such as grease and ink.
At the same time, do not worry about stains from the carpet cleaner itself. Some carpet cleaners leave shampoo and water stains when they dry.
Thanks to Hoover’s patented HeatForce function, you can make sure that all the water dries properly. The HeatForce feature amplifies any remaining shampoo into the carpet and evaporates the excess away.
For even faster drying, open a fan and place the rug in a well-ventilated room.
To avoid leaving unfinished stains, also move the cleaner back and forth as if you were making columns in the carpet.
Always overlap each ‘column’ by at least one inch so that you do not leave any spaces in between. This way you will review each segment of the rug without any errors.
Be aware, however; this process is very stressful. The harder the stain, the longer you have to go over it with the cleaner. No matter how light and compact the cleaner is, removing stains after a while becomes tiring.
Accessories / compatible products – “Easily accessible”
In addition to Paws & Claws Spot Remover, you can use a regular carpet cleaner and oxy solution.
If you are concerned about a particular stain, you can buy Hoover’s Pretreatment Spray. This spray is specific for pet stains, including stains from urine and feces.
Also, if you are looking for spare parts, you can find some on Hoover’s website. All you have to do is enter your model number and manufacturing code.
Through your model number you can see if the part is available, and with the manufacturing code you can see if the item is under warranty.
However, there are some items you can not get online. For example, if you have a broken pipe, contact the manufacturer directly to get a replacement.
In the webshop you can find smaller things such as belts, bags, filters and cleaning products.
Storage and maintenance – “Stored easily but difficult to clean”
Again, as the name suggests, the Hoover PowerDash Pet Compact Carpet Cleaner is compact and low profile, meaning it can be easily stored in any crack around your home.
It is not compact enough to travel comfortably, but it is more manageable than larger carpet cleaners. If you need to have it with you somewhere, you can easily disassemble it and store it in your car.
As it is low profile, it can also move under furniture and around high traffic areas with more ease. Therefore, you do not have to remove furniture every time you do the carpet cleaning.
What about maintenance?
The maintenance process is perhaps the most important mistake. The others are more design weaknesses than shortcomings.
First, clean the carpet cleaner after each use. Otherwise, pet hair, dirt and dust accumulate inside the cleaner, reducing its suction quality.
Second, pet hair tends to get stuck inside the water tank and in the brush roller. You need to remove it to prevent clogging.
What is the problem though?
There is no easy way to access the brush roller, nozzle, filters, suction pipe and even the water tank. You have to unscrew all the parts again and again, and even then you can not access everything.
With some parts, it is also easy to get confused. For example, the wastewater filter requires thorough cleaning after two or three uses. But you’re not supposed to take it out.
It is challenging to clean without removing it. On the other hand, if you have removed it, call the manufacturer to repair it because it is almost impossible to reinstall it.
Price & Warranty
Finally, how well does the Hoover PowerDash perform in terms of affordability?
It is one of the most budget friendly models on the market. If you are looking for an effective stain cleaner at a low price, this vacuum cleaner is an excellent choice.
Since it comes with a one year warranty, the purchase is not that risky. However, the warranty only covers certain parts. The main components such as the suction tube are not included.
What about the competition?
Now let’s talk about competition. In terms of its features and price, the Hoover PowerDash is comparable to the Bissell TurboClean Powerbrush Carpet Cleaner.
Both carpet cleaners are compact and lightweight. But – the Hoover PowerDash is more manoeuvrable due to its lightweight, extendable handle.
The Hoover PowerDash covers more space with its ten-inch cleaning path. The Bissell cleaning trail is only nine inches long.
Thanks to its dual tank system, the PowerDash does not leak, nor does it mix the dirty and clean water. Bissell tends to leak in the back.
However, the Bissell TurboClean wins on one essential thing: its cleaning ability.
It has two cleaning modes: deep and firm. The general mode is the same as Hoover’s deep cleaning mode, while the deep cleaning mode is more powerful and uses more solutions.
In this way, Bissell cleans more efficiently and switches between the two modes when needed.
One more thing: In terms of maintenance, both carpet cleaners fall short. The Bissell TurboClean has a similar maintenance process, making it inconvenient to clean.
All in all, both products are not without flaws. So think about your priorities. Do you need something with more powerful cleaning? Or are ease of use and easy maneuverability your primary concerns?
The bottom line
All in all, the Hoover PowerDash is a small but powerful carpet cleaner. Compared to the more expensive competition, there are no significant differences.
That’s why I recommend Hoover PowerDash to them:
- Are you looking for a budget-friendly carpet cleaner
- Want an effective stain remover for pets
- Who does not mind the intensive maintenance
