How to install an ice machine?

If you hold parties regularly, then you are probably used to the number of people who want ice cubes in their drinks. Ice cream is pretty much a necessity when it’s hot outside and people want a cold, refreshing drink. But it is annoying to have to run to the store every time the ice runs dry. Well, you can save yourself the hassle and money by getting an ice machine.

Ice cream makers give you all the ice cream you need and make sure you do not have to buy these cubes from the store every time you have any left over. But how do you install one? Fortunately, you do not always need a professional for this type of installation – you can do it yourself, as long as you know how. Here are some steps to follow.

Handling the dedicated cold water line

First things first you need to install the dedicated cold water line. This gives you the water needed to install the appliance. Below are the steps you need to take for the installation:

  • Check where the nearest cold water source is

The first thing you need to do is find the water source that is closest to where the ice machine is going. For example, this can be either in a wall, under a sink or under the floor. Do not hesitate to ask your landlord or former resident if you can not find the source.

In some cases, you may need to drill through the floor to find the pipe. In this case, you should consider asking a professional to do so.

  • Close the water

Before starting work on your ice machine installation, turn off the water by turning off the main valve. Then open the cold tap to drain the pipe.

  • Add a seat valve

Consider attaching a seat valve on the cold water pipe to a clean place. Use a wet cloth to wipe the tube before attaching the seat valve. Be sure to tighten the clamps properly to make them stable as they remain on the tube.

  • Make a hole in the pipe by screwing in the valve

You must now turn the valve handle clockwise; do this slowly. Keep doing this, even after you notice that there is some resistance, because this allows the needle to make a hole in the tube, and thus there will be no resistance anymore.

  • Add copper pipes

Insert one end of a 0.25 copper pipe into the valve opening. Then put on a small compression joint. This will ensure that the connection remains secure. When you are done with this, take some measurements of the amount of space between the cold water pipe and your ice making unit. This allows you to determine the required length and you know what copper pipes to buy.

  • Turn on the water

When you have finished attaching the copper pipe and seat valve, turn on the water, but only when you are sure the connections are secure.

  • Open the seat valve

Finally, grasp the handle of the seat valve and turn it counterclockwise. This opens the valve. Then place the end of the copper tube in a large bucket and let some water fill it. Close the valve afterwards.

How to install an Undercounter Ice Maker

How to install an Undercounter Ice MakerIf you prefer an under-ice-cream machine instead of a countertop, know that the steps are a little different. See the tips below to install it without any problems:

  • Measure the available space

Before installing the ice machine, make sure you have enough space for it. Then take a tape measure and check the length, height and width of the place where your ice machine is going to enter. By doing this, you will make sure that you get the right ice maker model that will fit. Do not buy the device before taking the measurements.

It is also ideal to make sure that you have at least 5 cm distance between the unit and the back of the cabinet. This will give it some ventilation.

  • Choose the right model

There is a wide range of amazing ice machine models on the market, so you need to choose the one that best suits your needs. Remember that these machines have different functions and different sizes. In addition, they will all have different costs. Make sure you have the budget for the type of ice machine you are buying. If not, you can always go for a smaller ice machine.

  • Make sure the selected model has a drain pump

Drainage pumps can be very useful because they release wastewater from various sources. Therefore, look for an ice machine that has such a pump. This will ensure that you have a device that works more efficiently and saves you from a lengthy installation process.

  • Attach the unit to the cold water line

Take a copper tube and insert it into the ice machine faucet, but not before running the cold water line from the tube to the back of the unit. Then tighten the compression bracket. This will make the connection secure.

  • Place the ice machine

When all is done, place the device in a specific location. Keep in mind that these machines are not the lightest, so you may need someone to help you move it. Attach the water pipe to it before mounting it. The pipes are then pulled out through the side holes of the cabinet. This will ensure that it is not stuck under the device.
