Why You Should Always Avoid Leaving Items | Solutions for business and home security

by Apr 9, 2021Safety

Burglars are always on the lookout for obvious locations in and around your property where they can easily strike and steal your valuables. This means that they sometimes explore your neighborhood, assess your surroundings and assess your security systems. Therefore, it is never a good idea to leave things visible. If you want to be one step ahead of burglars, it is important to understand what they can target and improve the security of your belongings.

According to the FBI, a burglary occurs every 30 seconds in the United States. Therefore, it is time to take responsibility for your valuables and hide them in a safe place before your property becomes the next target.

While robust home security systems are great for ensuring the safety of your property, it is equally important to pay attention and avoid leaving your belongings in plain sight.

Secure your personal affiliation instead of leaving things in plain sight

First things first, always record all the information about your valuables in a notebook and store them in a safe place. Avoid storing this sensitive information on your laptop or PC. If you want, you can share the list and details with a friend or family member.

Be sure to record the following details:

  • Manufacturer
  • Brand / model
  • Serial number
  • Color

In case of jewelry, keep the photographs of the items in a safe place. All this information helps the police to find your valuables in case of burglary.

Avoid leaving items in your car

Burglars are always on the lookout for easy targets for a quick “smash and steal” car burglary. According to research, in 2020, 20.2% of car owners were victims of car burglary. Valuable items that are visible are the biggest cause of car burglary.

Burglars are typically looking for items such as:

  • Cell phones
  • Laptops
  • Tablets
  • GPS devices
  • Purses / wallets
  • Backpacks / briefcases
  • Electronics
  • Shopping bags
  • Cash / coins

While the easiest thing to do to prevent car burglary is to avoid leaving these things in your cars, here are some other helpful tips for car safety:

  • Install a car safety system
  • Make sure your car doors are always locked and that windows are rolled up when your car is parked
  • Avoid parking your car in secluded parking lots
  • Park your car in well-lit areas
  • Avoid using the console box or glove compartment as a storage area
  • Do not leave your keys in the car
  • Take a moment before leaving your car and make sure you do not leave valuables in plain sight

Attach valuables inside your home

Avoid storing valuables such as electronics, cell phones, jewelry, etc. near windows. This is one of those most common mistakes in home security made by homeowners.

Place larger appliances and electronics such as Household appliances and televisions away from doors and windows. If you have space restrictions, be sure to cover the windows with blinds or drapes.

Keep the garage locked

9% of burglars enter through the garage. Therefore, keep your garage locked to prevent burglars from entering your home. Burglars know that most homeowners store their expensive tools, bicycles and cars in their garages. Consider securing your garage with a smart lock.

Pause home deliveries and mail

If you are planning a vacation or have to travel due to work, do not forget to stop your break home delivery and mail. These unsupervised packages can also attract burglars when you are not around. In your absence, you can also ask your neighbors to pick up your home supplies and mail.

Avoid fluttering packages with expensive items outside your home

Avoid leaving packages with expensive electronics such as game consoles and TVs outside your home. By leaving them open, you invite burglars to target your home. Crack the boxes and put them in the trash.
